Shimla, under the Deodars

Holidays provide the ultimate luxury of slowing down to enjoy the magical mornings and priceless sunsets. So to enjoy life’s simple pleasures… I head to the mountains.

Queen of Hills is where I’d rather be but anywhere else. Just like Britisher saw it while they were bossing around in India & made Shimla, the Summer capital of colonial India. Suspended clouds, hanging Houses, spectacular Deodar trees & deep forest valley what not to like being in Shimla.

Shimla holds a rich baggage of colonial history which can easily be seen in historic architecture and culture oldies follow here. Men here get suits up in morning and head toward cafes for endless cups of coffee & chatting.

The Viceregal Lodge

The Viceregal Lodge is also known as Rashtrapati Bhawan. It was built in 1888 and was used as the office and residence of the Viceroy of India, during the Summers when Shimla became India’s capital.

Scottish Architecture of the Lodge

While visiting the lodge I realised why Britishers must be shifting their base during summers. The View is incredible from this hill and interiors inside are to die for made from Imported Burmese Teak wood and has antiques, old books, photographs, Chandeliers and being equipped with Fire Safety System of that era.

Gaiety Heritage Cultural Theatre

Gaiety Theatre is 128 years old and one of its kind in Asian Continent. There’s been only two Theatres in the whole world of Victorian Gothic Architecture. Gaiety Halls is a miniature version of Albert Hall in London. Truly a preserved piece of history in the hills.
